hi bud buds,
bumble is building an ai dating app that matches users based on their responses to questions about past relationships, breakups, and dating experiences.
according to the wsj, the app will “get to know a user over a series of sessions, make a dating profile for them, find a match, and even help book reservations for a date.”
i love this use case for ai. using ai to parse long-form answers could create higher quality, non-obvious matches with romantic partners one might otherwise overlook due to superficial filters like height or job title. imagine matching on:
similar values: “you both described weekly family dinners or regular calls with grandma as beloved routines”
similar life goals: “peter wants to live in europe someday; emily loved studying in spain during college”
balancing of opposites : “trevor describes himself as cautious and calculated; catherine describes herself as spontaneous. this pairing often creates balance”
shared ambitions: “monique craves more adventure in her next relationship; spencer enjoys going mountain biking and skydiving”
subtle connections: “josh loves the freakonomics podcast; sarah mentioned her parents are both econ professors”
lifestyle compatibility: “marie stays up late reading; david is a night owl who likes coding after 10pm”
news coverage of ai <> romance is often fearful. just this week, there was backlash as meta launched ai celebrity chatbots that flirt with users.
i’ve written before that i feel these fears are overblown, as ai <> human relationships will remain highly stigmatized. in fact, my hope is that products like this (ai for dating) might actually help us connect better with each other.
have a great week, y’all. i love you.
